Following the success of our Paralympic and Olympic athletes, many sports halls, pitches, and clubs are due to receive additional funds in order to encourage increased levels of participation.

Equestrianism is no exception. Over the next four years, those looking to step into a pair of riding boots may be able to benefit from a £6million investment fund, managed by the British Equestrian Federation (BEF).

Although the BEF has not discussed how it intends to spend this lump sum, Andrew Finding, chief executive, stated, "We want to see more people riding in the countryside, on bridle paths, in urban areas, riding schools, clubs, colleges and livery yards."

He continued, "In doing so we will pay particular attention to young people between the ages of 14-25 as well as those with disabilities and those with a prodigious talent."

As well as attempting to get more people into equestrianism, the BEF will also continue its current schemes, such as the England Excel Talent Programme – a project which trains gifted riders in show jumping, eventing, and dressage.

If this £6million investment encourages more people to participate in equestrianism, then it can only be a good thing – especially if it develops a new team of athletes ready for the next Olympics in 2016.
